Biography

Born in 1888 at Barrow in Furness, he was a labourer before enlisting in the 2nd Battalion DLI at Newcastle upon Tyne in 1908. He served with 2 DLI throughout the Great War and later in Russia, Turkey, India and China. He was discharged as a Company Sergeant Major in 1929 after 21 years service. During the Second World War, he served with The Royal Engineers and Royal Artillery on searchlights. When his wife died in 1976, he joined The Royal Military Hospital at Chelsea. John Creber died in 1978 at Chelsea. He was the only DLI soldier to have the bar "Malabar 1921-22" with his India General Service Medal.
